METChat Jabber Instant Messaging

METNET now provides METChat, a Jabber Instant Messaging (IM) or chat technology. METChat enables users to exchange messages over the Internet in real time. Some people use the analogy that Jabber is "the Linux of instant messaging" - an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo.

One of the key features of METChat is that it's tied to the METNET account system. This allows each user to associate each chat participant with their METNET identity. Users can't masquerade as someone else and you always know who you're talking to.

How do I chat via METChat?

METChat uses Jabber technology. Use the Jabber Web Client or other Jabber-supported desktop clients to chat.

Since METChat is a real-time messaging system you must be logged in at the same time as other chat participants. Users may add buddies, chat with a buddy, take part in public or private chat rooms, and set up their own chats rooms. When you enter a chat room you'll see other participants listed by their METNET Internet ID or nickname.

Refer to the Quick Links box on the right-hand side of this page for more detailed information on how to use METChat.
