| Access METChat To access METChat via the Web Client, go to the METChat Login page at https://chat.metnet.edu/. You may wish to bookmark this page for future visits. Log in using your METNET Username and the METChat Jabber password created previously (See Get METChat). You are now ready to chat!
If you wish to use another desktop client please see the METChat FAQ for a list. Refer to the METChat Account Maintenance page for information needed when setting up a desktop client.
Set Preferences - To set preferences, such as chat window display or sound controls:
- Click the Preferences link in the top left corner of the Jabber Chat window. The Jabber Options window appears.
- Set your preferences as you wish, then close the Jabber Options window. Your preferences have been saved.
Add a Buddy The term buddy is used in Jabber when referring to any chat participant. You will need to know your buddy's nickname (their METNET Username), if you want to invite him or her for a chat. - Select the Add Contact (or +) icon in the bottom left corner of the window. The Send subscription window appears.
- In the Send subscription to textfield, type in the nickname (the METNET Username) of a buddy you wish to add.
- Add an optional invitation note if you like.
- To send an invitation, click Send. Your invitation will appear as a popup window when your buddy logs in to Jabber. If your invitation is accepted, you will be able to see when your buddy is online.
Send a Message to a Buddy Jabber allows you to send private messages to your buddies whenever they are online. Online buddies will show a lit bulb icon beside their name, and unavailable buddies will show a grey bulb icon. To send a message: - Click on your buddy's nickname. The Jabber Chat window appears.
- Type your message in the lower text field. To expand the text field, click on the small arrow icon to the left of the field.
- Press Shift-Enter to enter a new line
- Press Enter to post your message. Your message will show in the upper window, as well as your buddy's response.
Search for a chat room - Click on the Join Group Chat icon in the lower left corner of the Jabber Chat window. The Join Group Chat window appears.
- Click on the Open Search button.
- In the Search for Rooms window click on the Search button to show a list of available rooms.
Note: You will only see the rooms that have been configured to allow public searching. - Click on the name of the room you wish to join, then click the Join buton. Since some rooms are private (password protected), you might need to try a few before you find a public room.
Join a Private Group Chat Note: To enter a private room, you must know its name and password ahead of time. - Click on the Join Group Chat icon in the lower left corner of the Jabber Chat window. The Join Group Chat window appears.
- Enter the room name in the Room text field. The room name is not case sensitive.
- Enter the room password in the Password text field. The password is case sensitive.
- To enter the room, click the Join button.
- To start chatting type your message in the lower text field.
- Press Shift-Enter to enter a new line
- Press Enter to post your message. Your message will show in the upper window, as well as your buddy's response.
Join a Public Group Chat Joining a public room is very similar to joining a private room, except that no password is required. - Click on the Join Group Chat icon in the lower left corner of the Jabber Chat window. The Join Group Chat window appears.
- Enter the room name in the Room text field. The room name is not case sensitive.
- To enter the room, click the Join button.
- To start chatting type your message in the lower text field.
- Press Shift-Enter to enter a new line
- Press Enter to post your message. Your message will show in the upper window, as well as your buddy's response.
Create a New Chat Room - Click on the Join Group Chat icon in the lower left corner of the Jabber Chat window. The Join Group Chat window appears.
- Type a name for your new room in the Room text field.
- Click the Join button to continue. A dialog window opens, asking you to configure your new chat room. Note: Only a chat room owner (creator) may change the room customization settings.
- Select OK. The Room Configuration window appears.

- If you don't want the room to disappear when the last person leaves, check the Make Room Persistent checkbox.
- If you want to make it a private room, check the box labeled "A Password is required to enter" and type a password in the Room Password text field.
- If you want to disallow public searching for this room, uncheck the Allow Public Searching for Room checkbox.
- Click OK to finish.
- To start chatting type your message in the lower text field.
- Press Shift-Enter to enter a new line.
- Press Enter to post your message. Your message will show in the upper window, as well as your buddy's response.
Delete a Chat Room To delete a chat room, you must have an Instant Messaging (IM) client installed that supports room deletion. Refer to METChat home page at https://chat.metnet.edu/account for IM client information and links. Change a Jabber Password - Open a web browser and go to https://chat.metnet.edu/account.
- Login using your METNET Username and password.
- Click the Change password button.
- Enter your new Jabber password and press the Change password button. Your Jabber password has been changed.
