The Future of H.323 and How the Industry is Preparing

With all the new codecs on the market today H.323 is going in bigger directions. Since video over IP was initiated, (2002) the basic call speed was 256 or 384 kilobits per second (kbps). Today we have units that are High Definition and they call out at 2 megabits per second (mbps) or better for high quality video. Today's producers of codecs seem to all be going in the high def direction. In the future it will be common to have all units with the high def capabilities and we are currently working with Office of Enterprise Technology to develop Quality of Service that range from low to the high bandwidth demands of high def. Listed below are links to product information pages for three of the major vendors.

Video Migration Strategy

METNET was the first region to deploy video over IP in 2002. COMET did a more gradual change over and it was completed in 2005. Currently a migration strategy is being developed for both regions that would include similar vendor platforms that would support the current needs of member institutions plus the features of high definition interactive video. METNET's Polycom infrastructure is nearing the end of its supported life cycle (2009) and COMET's Tandberg infrastructure also needs to be updated.
